How We Mix and Glaze Our Ceramic Pots
At Sapphire, glazing is both a science and an art — the final touch that gives each pot its soul.
We begin by carefully mixing the glaze from natural minerals and oxides. Each recipe is unique, depending on the desired color and finish — from earthy matte tones to glossy, reflective surfaces. Our artisans know just how much water to add and how long to stir, achieving the perfect consistency for smooth, even application.
When it comes to applying the glaze, we use the traditional pouring technique — known as “glaze pouring” or “glaze showering.” The pot is held at a precise angle while the glaze is gently poured or “rained” over the surface. This method creates natural flow marks, unique patterns, and beautiful gradients that no machine can replicate.
After glazing, the pots are dried and fired at high temperatures, where the glaze transforms into a durable glass-like layer, bonding permanently to the clay. No two pots are ever the same — each piece reflects the hand of the maker and the unpredictable magic of the kiln.
